COVID-19 vaccination update: January 5, 2021

The first COVID-19 vaccines have arrived at LMH Health. While this is an exciting milestone, it will take time for vaccines to become widely available to all who want or need them. We are working closely with local, state and national health agencies and will keep you informed as phased distribution plans take shape.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) made the decision to provide the first doses to frontline healthcare workers and residents and staff of long-term nursing facilities. Healthcare workers must be protected in order to continue providing care – not only to COVID-19-positive patients, but to patients with any health condition. Seniors living in nursing homes are deemed a high-risk and vulnerable population in need of early intervention.

While we know many people are hopeful to receive a COVID-19 vaccination soon, LMH Health is dependent on the federal and state governments for vaccine allocation. To date, we have received 1,600 doses from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).

The KDHE estimates that Phase 1A distribution of the vaccine to healthcare personnel and long-term care facilities will last through at least January. Essential workers, educators, law enforcement, and people age 75 and older are eligible to receive the vaccine in the next round (Phase 1B) as outlined in KDHE's plan. Those who are in a lower-risk category will most likely get vaccinated in late spring/early summer. These timelines are subject to change and will depend on vaccine availability.
