Palliative Care Goals

  • Manage pain and other symptoms to achieve the best quality of life.
  • Give emotional and spiritual support to you and your family members. (Family members are those people who are close to you, regardless of whether they are legally related to you.)
  • Ease decision making that allows your wishes to be heard and respected.
  • Communicate your wishes for care to other providers within the hospital and in the healthcare community to ensure that you are heard.
  • Assist you and your family with advance care planning, which will include completing a living will and/or durable power of attorney for health care -- before a crisis occurs.
  • Provide education and support to staff members who are caring for you, all to ensure you receive high-quality care.
