Nate Penny Rooftop Garden Memorial
Nate Penny
As Nate Penny would often say, “Love wins!”
Nate Penny is remembered by many in the Lawrence community as a beloved and hardworking friend. An exceptional athlete, Nate was part of three state championship football teams at Lawrence High from 1989 to 1991. He was a member of the University of Kansas football team, playing in the 1992 Aloha Bowl and 1993 Kickoff Classic.
Nate worked for Penny’s Concrete for many years, and coaching high school football was one of the countless ways that Nate gave back to the community. Nate had a deep faith and was able to connect with many on a personal and spiritual level.
A tribute to a beloved son
Sadly, Nate passed away on August 10, 2020. During his treatment at LMH Health, Nate would occasionally visit the hospital’s rooftop garden, a large, open space where patients, employees and visitors can step outside and enjoy a break in the fresh air.
Bill and Marlene Penny, Nate’s parents, recently made a generous gift to the LMH Health Foundation to support renovation of the rooftop garden in honor of their son. Nate loved the outdoors, and the Penny family understands the positive impact that sunshine has on morale and mental health.
Thank you for your support!
We are grateful to the community and LMH Health medical staff for completing the fundraising for this important project. The rooftop garden renovations are now complete - the public is invited to visit the space and the new Louis Copt mural at LMH Health's main campus. Read more about the rooftop garden here.
