Diabetes Education Center at Lawrence Endocrinology

If you’ve been diagnosed with Type 1, or Type 2, gestational diabetes or prediabetes, you may be overwhelmed by information about this complex disease. Making healthy choices, monitoring your blood sugar, taking your medications, and staying physically active help reduce your risk for complications.

The Diabetes Education Center at Lawrence Endocrinology offers individualized care to help you to understand your illness and take control of your overall health. Our certified diabetes care and education specialists, consisting of a registered nurse and a dietitian, provide education in individual and small group classes.

Education to manage and monitor your diabetes well

The Diabetes Education Center offers a wide range of resources and education on these topics:

  • The disease process
  • Individualized goal setting
  • Nutrition and meal planning
  • Managing diabetes alongside other health conditions
  • Preventing complications
  • Medications and monitoring
  • Physical activity
  • Preconception education and diabetes in pregnancy
  • Psychosocial effects of diabetes
  • Resources and support
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS)
  • Insulin pump and sensor training taught by a certified pump trainer
  • Other diabetes management strategies, such as insulin administration therapy

James Florez, RN, CDCES

James Florez, RN, CDCES

James joined the LMH Diabetes Education Center in 2019. He worked as a registered nurse for North Kansas City Hospital on their telemetry and renal unit for 10 years, and then for Hellman and Rosen Endocrinology where he obtained his Diabetes Educator Certification in 2017. He lives in Gardner and enjoys hiking/backpacking in the mountains and playing music as an accomplished musician.

 

 

Aubrey Kough, MS, RDN, LD

Aubrey Kough, MS, RDN, LDN, CDCES

Aubrey joined the LMH Diabetes Education Center in 2021 and obtained her Diabetes Educator Certification in 2022.  She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, and a Master of Science degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Sensory Sciences.  Aubrey is a Lawrence native, where she gained experience in community health, foodservice, long-term care, and acute care prior to specializing in diabetes education. She and her husband currently live in Lawrence with their son and two dogs.
